Settlements in the area took place in various nations since the 18th to the 13th century BC and Kadan was a Slavic fortress. The first written mention of Kadan is from the year 1183. In 1362 the town and the castle was destroyed by fire. Under the reign of King Charles IV. the city was restored. King and Emperor multiplied privileges, and again promoted to the royal city.
